| Job Summary: |
The Academic Department Supervisor is the on-site, day-to-day business manager
of Department operations. This position supports the Pharmacology Department
Chair in administrative and fiscal operations, which are essential to meeting
the mission and goals of an academic department. The Department Chair,
faculty, and staff rely on the Department Manager to take responsibility for
the legal and ethical operations of the Department within the parameters of the
Federal, State, and University systems. The position advises and assists the
Chair in the formulation and preparation of the Department operating budget,
assumes primary responsibility for delivery of advanced level financial
services to the Department Chair and faculty , supervises Department staff,
analyzes the service needs of the Department associated with vacant staff
positions, provides pre- and post-award grants management, develops and
maintains databases, and performs special tasks assigned by the Chair,
especially those related to the administrative operation of the
Department. The mission of the Department of Pharmacology is to expand basic scientific knowledge through research, to teach the principles of pharmacology and toxicology to medical students, to prepare graduate students for research careers in cellular and molecular pharmacology and toxicology, and to provide service to the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), the University of Wisconsin, and the people of the State of Wisconsin. By supporting the Department Chair, faculty, and staff, and by assuring the efficient and effective functioning of the Department, the Department Manager plays a key role in the ability of the Department to carry out its mission. Providing needed administrative support for projects related to the fiscal, educational, and research missions of the Department depends upon the ability to understand and interpret State of Wisconsin, UW System, UW-Madison, and SMPH policies and procedures. The Department Manager is the primary translator of these policies and procedures, and thus, a critical need for the Manager is good judgement in their implementation. Success depends upon understanding the constraints associated with policies and procedures and identifying effective techniques in order to accomplish Department objectives without being disruptive within the system. | |
